42-hour working week: implementing the reduction

The Labour Directorate clarifies the actual reduction in working time and the rule applicable when there is no agreement.

The development

Labour Directorate Legal Opinion No. 253/21 addresses the reduction from 44 to 42 hours per week from 26 April 2026. It prioritises agreement and requires an actual reduction in time worked.

In the absence of agreement, the reduction must be applied at the end of the working day, according to the weekly distribution and the reduction units established by law.

Why it matters

Schedules, contract amendments and attendance records should be reviewed to verify that the working hours comply with the corresponding reduction stage.
